Getting started on joining the server with an IRC client is fairly easy, especially if you already have experience.

It's as simple as downloading the client version of your choice, installing it, then pointing it at the ChatNET

server address (irc.chatnet.ca) with the appropriate port. (6667).

A few of us here are using the AdiIRC client, (for Windows), which I will explain why we chose it.

There is various IRC client software out there, that is considered "shareware" or "freeware", but sometimes

those come with hidden agenda, nags, or prompting to subscribe for more features, etc. The AdiIRC we use

is a totally free and fully functional IRC client, without any of the common BS that one may run into.

Best of all, it's like a portable app with no real installation procedure, other than the executable generating

necessary files needed in the same folder. Then it's good to go. (screenshot below)

IMPORTANT:

Before we go any further, once you log on to the server with the client and chosen nickname, if you want to keep that name, you need to immediately register it with NickServ. (See Server Commands page for help.)

When logged in to the server, type /NickServ REGISTER password email

You DO NOT need email confirmation, but you're required to enter one for nick registration. I would,

however, recommend using a real email that you have access to, for future. If there is a problem with your

server/nick account. It's the only way we can verify that you are the owner of the nickname.

DO NOT forget the password you enter. If you mistype it 3 times on the server, NickServ will boot you.

Every time you log on to the server, with a registered nickname, NickServ will ask you to identify. If you

don't, or can't, your nickname will be autochanged to a guest name. When logged in, you will have 1 minute

to type /NickServ IDENTIFY password

WARNING : AT NO TIME, WILL ADMIN OR AN IRC-OP ASK YOU FOR

PASSWORDS. IF YOU ENCOUNTER THIS, IT'S A FRAUD!!

The following instructions are based on downloading and using the AdiIRC client (See Download page for links).

Downloading the AdiIRC install file.

I personally would recommend creating a unique folder on your computer to put the downloaded file in. Because when you click on that exe file, that's where your client will be to start the client up.

Running the AdiIRC client.

After that first step, all you need to do, is create a shortcut on your desktop of that same install file to run the AdiIRC client. That's all there is to it.

Connect Window

You may find a couple of windows popup, one being a server list window, which you don't really need, but the Quick Connect window is most important.

The Nick, Username and Fullname can all be the same.

The server name needs to be ours, irc.chatnet.ca and the

port needs to be 6667. (usually is by default).

Make sure that box for SSL is NOT CHECKED or it

won't connect to our server on the 6667 port.

If your client is going to connect using SSL, you MUST set the port to 6697
